A language exchange that does not need matching schedules
You have ten quiet minutes. The person you would like to practise with might be asleep. A Hello lets you begin anyway: record a short voice note or write a few lines for one fellow learner. They can answer later.
Hellos are part of Talkle, a peer language-practice app made by Andrew. They are introductions to real people, not conversations with an AI tutor or a promise of a reply.
Try a Hello in EnglishOne small detail is enough
A first message does not have to be your whole life story. Try one everyday detail, a little explanation, and an easy question.
Example to adapt: “A small thing that made my day was finding a new song for my walk. I've played it three times already. What have you been listening to lately?”
Replace the song with something true for you: a meal, a film, a hobby or a small weekend plan. Read it out loud once, then record it or send it as text. You do not need to use all 60 seconds or share your workplace, address or contact details.
If they mention a favourite song, try “What do you like about it?” rather than moving straight to another topic. More conversation starters and follow-ups.
From a Hello to a conversation
- Verify your email and finish account setup, then choose your practice language.
- Send up to 60 seconds of voice or a short written introduction. It goes to one eligible learner practicing that same language.
- If they reply, your free private text chat opens immediately. Keep talking there, or suggest a time for a video call.
A Hello can wait for a recipient, and someone may not reply. A partner can be a fellow learner, not necessarily a native speaker or teacher. You can pause new Hellos, remove a connection, or block and report someone.
When you both want to talk by video
Suggest a time in your private chat. Talkle displays times in each person's local timezone. You can also post or join an open time without a Hello first. Planning is free; it is not a paid class or a hosted session.
Scheduled calls start with 15 minutes, and both people can add another 15 minutes together near the end, including on Free. Ordinary live-queue calls start with eight minutes. Both use the normal conversation allowances and camera safety checks. Accepting a time never starts a call automatically: the room opens five minutes early, and both people must join. Attendance is not guaranteed.
Questions before your first Hello
Do we need to be online at the same time?
No. Hellos are asynchronous voice or text introductions. Send yours when you have time; another eligible learner can respond later. Delivery and replies are not guaranteed.
Can I write instead of recording my voice?
Yes. Send a short written Hello or record up to 60 seconds. Both go to one eligible person practicing the same language, not to a public feed.
What happens after someone replies?
A reply opens your free private text chat immediately. You can continue chatting or suggest a video-call time. You can remove or block a connection anytime.
Is it free?
Free members can send three new Hellos per UTC day; Plus includes ten. Replies, private text chats and call planning are free. Normal call allowances apply when you join a video call.
Who can send a Hello?
You must be at least 18, verify your email and complete Talkle account setup, including the community rules. You can then send and receive Hellos, or pause new Hellos in preferences.
Are voice Hellos saved?
Yes. Unlike live video calls, which Talkle does not record, a voice Hello is a recording you choose to send. Its audio, text and automatic transcript are kept for 30 days from the original send. Submitted content is processed for automated safety review and transcription. Private chats are not end-to-end encrypted.
Read the full privacy details, community safety rules and current Free and Plus terms. Automated safety and transcription checks can make mistakes.
Start with a real sentence, not a perfect introduction
Choose something you would enjoy hearing another person answer. One detail and one question give them a place to start.
